Up to 350,000 silver dollar coins will be issued by the US Mint as part of the program. The coins will be struck to both proof and uncirculated conditions.

The composition of each coin will be 90% silver and 10% copper. This is the standard composition for all modern commemorative silver dollars.

Congress authorized the Girl Scout Coins with the passage of the Girl Scouts USA Centennial
Commemorative Coin Act. The Act became Public Law 111-86 when it was signed by President Obama on October 29, 2009.

According to the terms of the Act, surcharges of $10 will be collected by the US Mint on the sale of each coin. These surcharges will be forwarded to the Girl Scouts of the USA which will make the funds available for Girl Scout program development and delivery.

The US Mint will also be releasing the 2013 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coins in 2013.

Coin Design

The authorizing legislation for the Girl Scouts of the USA Commemorative Silver Dollars requires that they feature designs "emblematic of the centennial of the Girl
Scouts of the United States of America."

As such, the obverse of each coin depicts three girls representing the different ages and the diversity of the Girls Scouts of the USA. The obverse design is the work of United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) Master Designer Barbara Fox with sculpting to be completed by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill. Obverse inscriptions include COURAGE, CONFIDENCE and CHARACTER, 2013, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST.

Shown on the reverse of the Girl Scouts Silver Dollar is a design that depicts the iconic Trefoil/profiles symbol of the Girl Scouts of the USA. The design is the work of AIP Associate Designer Chris Costello with sculpting to be completed by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna. Reverse inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $1 and GIRL SCOUTS
