These coins are issued as part of the US Mint's America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin® Program and America the Beautiful Five Ounce Uncirculated Coin™ Program. Both series feature five new strikes released annually each composed of five ounces of .999 fine silver with diameters of three inches.

The two series showcase designs originally created for a third US Mint program, the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. However, the intended markets for all three series are quite different.

Quarter dollars are generally struck for circulation and are usually composed of a clad composition. The five ounce coins are struck from silver with the bullion coins intended for investors and the uncirculated coins intended for collectors.

Bullion coins from the US Mint are sold through a network of authorized purchasers for a small premium above the spot price of the precious metals they contain. The uncirculated coins are struck for numismatic purposes and are initially sold directly to the public for a much larger premium over and above any melt value.

Shown on the obverse of all America the Beautiful related coins is the same portrait of the first President of the United States, George Washington. This portrait was designed by John Flanagan. Obverse inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR.

The reverse of the Fort McHenry Silver Coins contain a design emblematic of the national monument and historic shrine. It offers a view of the fort during the annual "Defenders Day" celebration. Reverse inscriptions include FORT McHENRY, MARYLAND, 2013, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.  The reverse was designed and executed by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna.
