2013 First Spouse Gold Coins

Appearing as the eighth year in a series honoring the nation's first spouses is the 2013 First Spouse Gold Coins. Designs found on each of the coins depict different spouses of the former Presidents of the United States in the order in which the associated chief executive served in office.

The United States Mint strikes each First Spouse Gold Gold from 1/2 ounce of 24-karat gold. They are issued in either proof or uncirculated condition.

The First Spouse series is offered as a companion program to the related Presidential Dollars also issued by the US Mint. Both were originally authorized by Congress with the passage of the Presidential Coin Act of 2005 (Public Law 109-145).

According to the terms of the Act, the Presidential Dollars are released at a rate of four per year honoring the Presidents in the order in which they served. These associated spouse coins are to be issued at a similar rate with the spouse of the President to be honored in the same year as the Presidential Dollar appears.

Some exceptions in the series and its release rate were allowed for in the authorizing legislation. For example, if a President served in office without a spouse, the image of Liberty will appear on the associated Spouse Coin instead.

Allowances were also made for those Presidents who had more than one spouse while in office. In these instances, both spouses will be honored on separate coins meaning more than four Spouse Coins could be released in a year. This is exactly what happens in 2013 with a total of five Spouse Gold Coins scheduled with two honoring the wives of President Woodrow Wilson - Ellen and Edith.

Additional information on all four of the 2013 releases as well as the women they honor can be found below.

Ida McKinley First Spouse Gold Coin - These strikes mark the first releases of the 2013 First Spouse Gold Coins. Shown on the obverse of each is a portrait of Ida McKinley, wife of William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States.

Shown on the reverse is a scene emblematic of Ida's life.

Edith Roosevelt First Spouse Gold Coin - Appearing as the second strike in 2013 of the series is the coin honoring Edith Roosevelt, wife of the 26th US President, Theodore Roosevelt. Like other coins of the series, each contains an obverse portrait of the First Lady with a reverse design emblematic of her life.

These coins are struck and released in both proof and uncirculated conditions.

Helen Taft First Spouse Gold Coin - The third release of the First Spouse series in 2013 is the coin honoring Helen Taft, wife of President William Howard Taft who served as the 27th chief executive of the United States from 1909-1913.

The coin honoring Helen Taft is struck from 1/2 ounce of .9999 fine gold, like all others of the series.

Ellen Wilson First Spouse Gold Coin - Appearing as the fourth strike in 2013 of the spouse series is the Ellen Wilson Coin honoring the first wife of President Woodrow Wilson. She served as the First Lady of the United States from March 4, 1913 until her death on August 6, 1914.

The coin contains a portrait of Ellen on the obverse and a scene emblematic of her life on the reverse.

Edith Wilson First Spouse Gold Coin - The last strike to be issued in the series in 2013 is the coin honoring Edith Wilson, second wife of President Woodrow Wilson. Edith married the President on December 18, 1915  and served as First Lady until March 4, 1921.

Her coin marks the fifth to appear in the year.
