2013 American Buffalo Gold Coins

The 2013 American Buffalo Gold Coin appears from the United States Mint as a continuation of a series of coins dating back to 2006. Each coin is struck by the US Mint from one ounce of .9999 fine 24-karat gold.

The coins were authorized by Congress with the passage of the Presidential Coin Act of 2005 along with Presidential $1 Coins as well as First Spouse Gold Coins. Of interest, the Spouse Gold Coins are also struck from .9999 fine gold, the only two series from the US Mint to be featured in such purity.

Gold Buffalos are issued by the Mint in both bullion and numismatic versions. The bullion coins are sold by the Mint through a network of authorized purchasers. These APs obtain the coin in bulk from the Mint and then resell them to the public for a small premium above the market value of the gold they contain.

The numismatic versions are struck to proof quality by the US Mint. When initially released, they are sold directly to the public.

In 2008, the one ounce Buffalos were joined by fractional offerings including 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce. Their appearance was short-lived, however, as the Mint cancelled the fractional sizes later in the year and they have not been offered since.

Buffalo Coin Design

The obverse of each American Buffalo Gold Coin features the same image of the profile of a Native American. The design is originally taken from the 1913 circulating nickel known to many as either the "Indian Head Nickel" or the "Buffalo Nickel" by James Earle Fraser. Obverse inscriptions include "LIBERTY" and the year of minting.

Shown on the reverse is a depiction of an American buffalo (bison) standing on a mound of dirt which was also originally featured on the 1913 nickel. Reverse inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST," the face value of the coin, the denomination of the coin and ".9999 FINE GOLD."
