2013 5-Star General Commemorative Coins

The 2013 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin Program is one of two commemorative coin programs to be issued by the United States Mint in 2013. Coins of this particular program feature obverse and reverse imagery in recognition of five United States Army 5-star generals and the 132nd anniversary of the founding of the United States Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC).

2013 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coins (Line-Art)

The 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin Program features $5 gold coins, silver dollars and half-dollar clad coins. Each will appear in both proof and uncirculated conditions.

Honored on the coins of the program include these 5-star generals:

  • Douglas MacArthur
  • George C. Marshall
  • Henry "Hap" Arnold
  • Dwight D. Eisenhower
  • Omar N. Bradley

This program was authorized by Congress with the passage of the 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin Act. The act became Public Law 111-262 when it was signed by President Obama on
October 8, 2010.

Under the terms of the act, up to 100,000 $5 gold coins , 500,000 $1 silver dollars and 750,000 half-dollar clad coins will be issued. As previously mentioned, they will appear in both proof and uncirculated conditions.

Surcharges will be collected on the sale of each coin with the proceeds forwarded to the CGSC Foundation to help finance its activities in support of the college. Surcharge amounts include $35 for each gold coin sold, $10 for each silver dollar and $5 for each clad coin.

In 2013, the US Mint will also be releasing the 2013 Girl Scouts Silver Coins

Coin Designs

The obverse of the 5-Star Generals $5 Gold Coin depicts a portrait of General Douglas MacArthur by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) Associate Designer Ronald D. Sanders and sculpted United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Michael Gaudioso. The reverse features the Leavenworth Lamp, the symbol of the CGSC, as designed by AIP Master Designer Barbara Fox designed the reverse and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna.

Shown on the obverse of the 5-Star Generals Silver Dollar is portraits of Generals George C. Marshall and Dwight D. Eisenhower. It was designed by AIP Master Designer Richard Masters with sculpting by Joseph Menna. The reverse also depicts the Leavenworth Lamp design by Barbara Fox.

The 5-Star Generals Half-Dollar Coin offers the portraits of Generals Henry "Hap" Arnold and Omar N. Bradley on the obverse. It was designed by Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill. She also designed the reverse which depicts the heraldic crest of Fort Leavenworth
