2012 US Mint Silver Proof Set

The 2012 US Mint Silver Proof Set contains 14-proof quality examples of the circulating coins issued by the United States Mint just like the similar 2012 Proof Set. However, making this 2012 Silver Proof Set different is the fact that seven of the coins included in the set are struck from 90% silver.

Silver Proof Sets debuted on June 4, 2012 at a price of $67.95.

90% silver compositions are referred to at times as "coin silver." This same composition is standard for many silver coin products including the silver dollar commemoratives struck by the US Mint like the 2012 Star-Spangled Banner Silver Dollar and the 2012 Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar.

However, unlike those commemoratives, coins of this set are produced to represent the circulating coins issued by the US Mint during the year. In total, fourteen different circulating coins were struck during 2012 with all fourteen represented in the set.

Of those fourteen, seven are composed from the aforementioned 90% silver. Those seven include the five America the Beautiful Quarters®, the Kennedy Half Dollar and the Roosevelt Dime. The remaining strikes in the set are composed of their standard clad composition

The 2012 US Mint Silver Proof Set will contain the following fourteen coins:

  • 2012-S Proof Lincoln Cent
  • 2012-S Proof Silver Denali America the Beautiful Quarter
  • 2012-S Proof Jefferson Nickel
  • 2012-S Proof Silver Kennedy Half Dollar
  • 2012-S Proof Silver Roosevelt Dime
  • 2012-S Proof Native American Dollar
  • 2012-S Proof Silver El Yunque America the Beautiful Quarter

Each of the coins are produced in the San Francisco Mint and carry the denoting "S" mint mark. Coins of the set will be presented in three separate lenses. These lenses both protect the coins as well as allow the holder to view both the obverse and reverse of each coin. One lens will contain the four 2012 Presidential Dollar Coins, one lens will contain the five silver 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters and one lens will contain the remaining five coins.

In a related product, the U.S. Mint on November 27, 2012 released a limited edition silver proof set for $149.95. It contains the same coins as those listed above, minus the clad versions, as well as an American Silver Eagle. The proof Silver Eagle is minted from West Point and has a "W" mint mark.
