2012 US Mint Proof Set
The 2012 US Mint Proof Set contains fourteen proof quality strikes representative of the circulating coins produced by the United States Mint during the year. The proof quality strikes of the set are struck from clad like their circulating counterparts, however, their finish and associated detail make the sets highly sought after by many.
Like previous releases, the 2012 US Mint Proof Set is likely to be extremely popular with collectors. Well over a million of the annual sets are typically purchased making them the most popular set and numismatic product issued by the Mint.
Coins in the set are struck at the US Mint's facility in San Francisco. As such, they each bear a 'S' mintmark.
Production of the proof coins is a special process different from circulating coins. The US Mint describes the proof coin as:
"Extraordinarily brilliant, with sharp relief and a mirror-like background. Their frosted, sculpted foregrounds give them a special cameo effect. Proof blanks are specially treated, polished and cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes. The blanks are then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies and struck at least twice to ensure sharp relief."
Coins of the set are separated into three different lenses to help protect their finish while allowing the viewer to look at both the obverse and reverse of each strike. One of the lenses contain the five proof-quality 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters®, another contains the four proof 2012 Presidential Dollars with the final lens containing the remaining proof coins representative of the circulating strikes issued by the Mint - the Native American Dollar, the Kennedy Half Dollar, the Roosevelt Dime, the Jefferson Nickel and the Lincoln Cent.
