by Coin Collecting News Staff on January 9, 2012

The 2012 First Spouse Gold Coins mark the seventh year in a series of strikes dedicated to the spouses of the former Presidents of the United States. Each coin in the series is struck from 1/2 ounce of 24-karat gold to either proof or uncirculated condition.

This series of First Spouse Gold Coins is offered by the Mint as a companion series to the Presidential Dollars which feature the former Presidents themselves. Both programs operate on a schedule linked to the former Presidents with four Presidents (and their associated spouses) honored annually in their respective series.

However, owing to special circumstances in association with Presidential spouses, several allowances had to be made to the First Spouse Gold Coin program. First such example is for when a President had more than one spouse while in office. If this occurred, then both spouses will be honored on separate coins.

The second allowance is for Presidents who served in office without a spouse. Under this situation, typically a depiction of Liberty will be shown on the associated spouse coins. The only exception to this is the 2012 Spouse Coin released in association with the Chester Arthur Presidency which will feature a likeness of Alice Paul instead.

These First Spouse Gold Coins are authorized, along with the Presidential Dollars, by the Presidential Coin Act of 2005 (Public Law 109-145).

Additional information on all four of the 2012 releases as well as the women they honor can be found below.

Alice Paul First Spouse Gold Coin - Released in association with the Chester Arthur Presidency, the Alice Paul First Spouse Gold Coin honors Paul who was a well-known American Suffragist and activist. Paul was born on January 11, 1885, during the time of Arthur's administration.

She would not be know for her suffragist work, however, for decades. Her contributions to the movement directly led to the passage of the nineteenth amendment to the US Constitution.

Frances Cleveland (First Term) First Spouse Gold Coin - Like her husband, Grover, Frances is a bit of an anomaly in their respective coin series. She is featured on two separate coins of the series because Grover had two non-consecutive terms as President of the United States.

Frances married Grover when he was first in the White House. She was only twenty-one at the time while Grover was 27 years older.

Caroline Harrison First Spouse Gold Coin - Caroline Harrison was the wife of the 23rd President of the United States, Benjamin Harrison. She moved to the White House with him when his administration began on March 4, 1889.

Caroline was known for being responsible for an extensive remodeling of the White House as well as her progressive views and works. She died on October 25, 1892 while Benjamin was still President.

Frances Cleveland (Second Term) First Spouse Gold Coin - This strike honors the second time that Frances Cleveland served as First Spouse in the White House. It marks the second non-consecutive term of her husband, Grover, as President of the United States.

Frances is the only individual who served as First Spouse for two non-consecutive terms and, as such, the only to be featured on two different coins of the First Spouse Gold Coin series.

The First Spouse Gold Coins dates back to 2007. The coins released since the programs debut and leading up to the 2012 issues include:

  • 2007 - Martha Washington
  • 2007 - Abigail Adams
  • 2007 - Thomas Jefferson's Liberty

The Mint bases its price for each First Spouse coin on the weekly average of the London Gold Fix. As such, prices can fluctuate quite often.
