2011 US Mint Proof Set
The 2011 US Mint Proof Set is the most popular set and numismatic product issued by the United States Mint during the year. Collectors favor the set as it represents the circulating American coinage issued in the year, but struck to proof quality.
A total of 14 coins are included in the year's proof set. Each is mint at the US Mint's San Francisco facility and bears the appropriate "S" mint mark. For those unaware of what a proof coin is, the Mint describes them this way:
"Extraordinarily brilliant, with sharp relief and a mirror-like background. Their frosted, sculpted foregrounds give them a special cameo effect. Proof blanks are specially treated, polished and cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes. The blanks are then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies and struck at least twice to ensure sharp relief."
The United States Mint places the coins in in three separate lenses to help to protect their finish and to allow each coin's obverse and reverse designs to be viewed. One lens in the set contains the America the Beautiful Quarters® issued during the year. Another lens showcases the four Presidential Dollars released in 2011. The final lens carries the remaining circulating coins of 2011.
