2011 United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set

2011 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set

The 2011 United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set™ contains collector grade proof quality examples of each of the five circulating quarter dollars from the United States Mint. The set will be introduced on March 17, 2011 for $14.95.

Proof coins are described by the US Mint as "extraordinarily brilliant, with sharp relief and a mirror-like background." Each of the coins in this set was struck to proof quality at the United States Mint's facility in San Francisco and thus show the appropriate "S" mintmark. Typical circulation quality coins for everyday commerce are struck at either the US Mint's facility in Philadelphia or the US Mint's facility in Denver.

This set contains examples of the sixth through the tenth quarter dollars released under the United States Mint's America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. Under the program, five new strikes are released annually. Each strike contains a unique reverse design emblematic of a different site of national interest from around the United States. One site was chosen from each state, the District of Columbia and the five US Territories, for a total of fifty-six.

The five coins to be included in this set are:

  • 2011-S Gettysburg America the Beautiful Quarter - representing Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania
  • 2011-S Glacier America the Beautiful Quarter - representing Glacier National Park in Montana
  • 2011-S Olympic America the Beautiful Quarter - representing Olympic National Park in Washington
  • 2011-S Vicksburg America the Beautiful Quarter - representing Vicksburg National Military Park in Mississippi
  • 2011-S Chickasaw America the Beautiful Quarter - representing Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma

Design candidates for each coin are submitted to both the Citizen's Coinage Advisory Committee and the United States Commission of Fine Arts for their review and comment. Their input is forwarded along with that of the Director of the United States Mints to the Treasury Secretary who makes the final selection.

Each coin in the set is composed of a cupro-nickel composition identical to the circulating quarters. However, as mentioned before, each of these coins is struck to proof quality which the Mint further explains below:

"Their frosted, sculpted foregrounds give them a special cameo effect. Proof blanks are specially treated, polished and cleaned to ensure high quality strikes. The blanks are then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies and struck at least twice to ensure sharp relief. The coins are then packaged in a protective lens to showcase and maintain their exceptional finish."

Mintage for the sets is based on demand with collector interest in them typically driving the total mintage into the hundreds of thousands for previous similar releases.

The United States Mint has several different types of proof set offerings for 2011, including:

  • 2011 US Mint Proof Set
  • 2011 US Mint Silver Proof Set

The America the Beautiful Quarters contained within this set are also included as part of the Proof Set, Silver Proof Set and America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set listed above, the latter two of which showcase the quarter dollars in a 90% silver composition.
