The United States Mint will launch the 2009 US Mint Set on Oct. 1, 2009, for a price of $27.95. The annual set is one of the most popular Mint offerings with hundreds of thousands sold yearly. The 2009 set will carry on the success torch with its compliment of 36 coins, which is the most ever for a mint set.

Officially entitled the United States Mint Uncirculated Coin Set®, the product includes two envelopes of 18 coins. One envelop contains coins struck in Denver while the other has coins produced in Philadelphia. Unlike circulating change, these are minted in collector uncirculated condition, using specially burnished coin blanks and a special satin finish.

As has become standard since the state quarter series began in 1999, the new set contains many new coin designs to include:

The cents are a special highlight. Each celebrates the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth and the 100th anniversary of the original 1909 Lincoln cent. Additionally, the pennies are struck from the same bronze alloy of that original 1909 cent -- 95% copper, 3% zinc and 2% tin.

The mint set also includes uncirculated versions of the remaining coins American see in every day pocket change. Here is a list of them all

  • 2009 P & D Lincoln Log Cabin Penny
  • 2009 P & D District of Columbia Quarter

Sales of the annual sets are usually brisk. A past year's Proof or Mint set is typically on sale until replaced by the newer year's set. However, the US Mint pulled the 2008 Mint Set early. It went on sale July 30, 2008, and went off sale Feb. 25, 2009. During that time, US Mint sales figures show collectors purchased 745,464 sets.

For $29.95, the United States Mint also issues a 2009 US Mint Proof Set, with coins struck in proof cameo condition bearing the San Francisco "S" mint mark. 2009 Presidential Dollar Uncirculated Sets are also on sale for $15.95.
