The United States Mint started issuing the 2009 US Mint Presidential Dollar Uncirculated Set on April 2, 2009, for the price of $15.95.

The set is the third annual issue of uncirculated $1 coins honoring former American Presidents. It features eight satin finish coins housed in a presentation folder with "biographical sketches, notable quotes and portraits of each President." Four of the coins are minted in Philadelphia and four from Denver. Included are:

  • 2009 P & D William Henry Harrison Presidential Dollars
  • 2009 P & D John Tyler Presidential Dollars
  • 2009 P & D James K. Polk Presidential Dollars
  • 2009 P & D Zachary Taylor Presidential Dollars

Each of the presidential dollars has a common reverse (tails side) of the Statue of Liberty, designed and sculpted by Don Everhart.

Obverse (heads side) design information for the uncirculated 2009 Presidential Dollars follow:

  • William Henry Harrison - 9th President, with the coin sculpted and designed by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna. 

  • John Tyler - 10th President, with the coin honoring him designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill. 

  • James K. Polk - 11th President, with the commemorative dollar designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Susan Gamble and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Charles Vickers. 

  • Zachary Taylor - 12th President, with the $1 coin designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart.  

The mintages for all annual proof and uncirculated sets is based on demand. Collectors purchased 76,272 of the 2008 US Mint Presidential Dollars Proof Set, according to US Mint sales figures. Those sets were launched on July 24, 2008. As of Sept. 13, 2009, the Mint reported 72,983 of the 2009 US Mint Presidential Dollars Uncirculated Sets were purchased.

The United States Mint also issues a 2009 Presidential Dollars Proof Set, with coins struck in San Francisco bearing the "S" mint mark.

The coins are authorized under The Presidential $1 Coin Act , which was signed into law (Public Law 109-145) by former President Bush on December 22, 2005.
