The United States Mint placed the 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial One Cent Proof Set on sale August 26, 2009, for a price of $7.95.

The four included and redesigned cents commemorate the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth as well as the centennial of the first Lincoln cent. Each celebrates a different aspect of Lincoln's life with designs depicting his Birthplace, Formative Years, Professional Life, and Presidency.

The four 2009 Lincoln Cents are also composed of the same alloy used in the original 1909 penny, 95% copper, 3% zinc and 2% tin. The copper content of pennies has been reduced through the years because of high costs. Modern circulating pennies are compose of copper plated zinc (2.5% copper with remaining zinc).

The one-year-only issued 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial One Cent Proof Set includes:

  • 2009-S Proof Lincoln Log Cabin Penny - The reverse of this cent was designed by Richard Masters and sculpted by Jim Licaretz.

  • 2009-S Proof Lincoln Rail Splitter Penny - The reverse of this cent was designed and sculpted by Charles Vickers.

  • 2009-S Proof Lincoln Professional Life Penny - The reverse of this cent was designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Don Everhart

  • 2009-S Proof Lincoln Presidency Penny - The reverse of this cent was designed by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Joseph Menna.

The obverse or heads side of each proof features the familiar Victor D. Brenner designed likeness of President Lincoln that was first introduced in 1909.

Sales of the sets were strong out of the gate. Between their launch on a Wednesday and to the following Sunday, collectors purchased 66,350.

The United States Mint has several additional types of proof set offerings this year, including:

  • US Mint Proof Set (18-coin clad version)
  • US Mint Silver Proof Set
